This why newsrooms needs to invest more in reporters who cover these online subcultures. They are completely in over their heads trying to make sense of these meme ridden cess pits of human interaction. Nihilism is an overarching theme but it is weaponized at marginalized groups.

I had a feeling that she had read that Pamela Paul column. This kind of shows why these kinds of writings don't exist in a vacuum. The Times is the most influential paper in the country and its opinion section shapes how plenty of ostensibly liberal people think.

Any time a journalist tells you they "just report the facts" or "go where the story leads" them, ask them how they chose their story subject, ask them how they chose their sources, ask them how they chose which anecdotes to highlight, ask them what they cut.
